MLK Day Activity
For Martin Luther King Jr's Day, I wanted to highlight some of the activists who worked alongside him. I chose to highlight Bayard Rustin and Ella Baker, two figures who were exceptional in their own right.
Some Notable Things Achievements of Ella Baker and Bayard Rustin:
Ella Baker:
Helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, (1957), and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. (1960)
Helped create the organization that created freedom summer, (Southern Christian Leadership Conference),which helped gain black voters and fight racism in Mississippi.
Created In Friendship with Bayard Rustin, an organization developed to fundraise the money needed to fight Jim Crow laws.
Bayard Rustin:
March on washington’s chief organizer (Part of this included organizing and training a group of 2000 marshals. )
Protested a segregated restaurant in his hometown of West Chester, Pennsylvania.
Advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King and a strategist in the Civil Rights movement.
He fought for gay rights as well as rights for African Americans!
The Activity
The attached activity is a "guessing game" of sorts, where the students have to figure out which Civil Rights figure(s) (Elle Baker, Bayard Rustin, or MLK), the slide describes that reading the blurb are the bottom. This helps students become more familiar with the figures, as there is a slide that expands on the information after the blurb.
